Stairlift mechanism being stripped down and rebuilt

Reconditioned stairlifts in London

A stairlift rarely wears out before the household that needed it changes. Reconditioning is what happens next — stripped, rebuilt, tested, and fitted to somebody else’s stairs.

Where a reconditioned stairlift has already been

Every refurbished lift has a history, and understanding it tells you more about whether to buy one than any price comparison will.

One. It comes out

A bereavement, a house move, an upgrade to a curved lift, or a short-term need after an operation. The circumstances changed — the machine usually did not.

Two. It gets stripped

Down to components. This is where a genuine reconditioning separates from a wipe-down: everything that wears comes off and gets judged on its own.

Three. It gets rebuilt

Batteries, charging contacts, safety edges, upholstery and worn drive parts replaced. Chassis, motor housing and rail cleaned, inspected and tested.

Four. It goes back in

Surveyed against your staircase, the rail cut to your flight, fitted, run through its full travel and handed over to whoever is going to use it.

The rail decides everything

Why reconditioned means straight, nearly always

People ask why there is so little curved stock about, and assume it is scarcity or demand. It is neither. It is geometry.

A straight rail is a length of extrusion. Take it out of one house, cut it to the next staircase, fit it. It carries over, so it keeps its value and it keeps circulating.

A curved rail was bent to the exact rise, going and radius of one particular flight of stairs. It cannot be re-formed for another house. When that lift comes out, the chair and motor have value and the rail is scrap.

That one mechanical fact shapes the entire second-hand market. It is why reconditioned stairlifts are overwhelmingly straight, why a curved lift is sometimes advertised free to collector, and why you should ask hard questions about any cheap curved rail.

What gets replaced

Short-life parts out, long-life parts proved

A stairlift is a simple machine and the things that fail on one are well documented. A real refurbishment replaces the components with a known service life and verifies everything else.

  • Batteries — the most common failure on any lift, and the first thing to go in.
  • Charging contacts — where the lift takes power when parked. They pit and corrode.
  • Safety edges — the sensors that stop the lift against an obstruction.
  • Upholstery and trim — so it does not arrive looking like someone else’s.
  • Worn drive parts — inspected properly and changed wherever there is wear.

Chassis, motor housing and rail are cleaned, inspected and tested rather than swapped, because on a decent lift those outlast everything above by years.

And your old one

What happens to the lift you already have

If you are replacing rather than fitting for the first time, this is the part of the circle you are standing in.

We take the old lift away, and the removal sits inside the quoted price rather than appearing at the end. Where it goes next depends on the same thing as everything else on this page: if the rail was straight and the machine is in reasonable order, it has value and will likely be reconditioned itself. If it was curved, the rail has reached the end of its useful life even though the chair has not.

It is worth saying plainly that none of this is charity. A sound straight lift coming out is part of what keeps reconditioned stock available and keeps the price of it down. The circle is the reason the option exists at all.

Buying one

What to ask, and when we would say buy new

We supply both, so there is nothing in it for us either way. That is the whole reason to ask an independent firm rather than a maker.

Ask what was replaced

A list, not an adjective. "Fully serviced" with nothing behind it is the answer to be wary of, whoever is giving it.

Ask about cover, in writing

New Acorn lifts carry a 12-month manufacturer guarantee. Cover on a refurbished unit is a different question and varies — so get the answer written down.

Ask if the rail suits your stairs

Not whether it can be made to. A straight rail cuts down; a curved one does not. This is the question that decides whether the rest matters.

When new is the honest answer

If your staircase turns, the weight is near the limit, or it needs to last decades — we will tell you, even though new is worth more to us.

Questions

Reconditioned stairlifts: your questions answered

What does reconditioned actually mean?
That the lift has been stripped, had its worn components replaced, been rebuilt and then tested before resale — batteries, charging contacts, safety edges, upholstery and any worn drive parts as a minimum. It is not a clean and a polish. If a seller cannot tell you what was replaced and who did it, the word is doing no work.
Where do reconditioned stairlifts come from?
Houses where the lift is no longer needed. A bereavement, somebody moving, an upgrade to a curved lift after a house move, or a short-term need after an operation. The machines are usually sound — it is the circumstances that changed, not the lift.
Why are nearly all of them straight?
Because of the rail. A straight rail is a length of extrusion that can be cut down to fit the next staircase, so it carries over. A curved rail was bent to the rise, going and radius of one particular staircase and cannot be re-formed, so it has no second life. That single mechanical fact shapes the whole second-hand market.
Is a reconditioned stairlift as reliable as a new one?
A properly rebuilt lift from a decent maker is a sound machine. These are simple, robust things and the parts that wear are well known and replaceable. The reliability comes from the quality of the refurbishment rather than the age of the unit, which is why what was replaced matters far more than the year on it.
What cover comes with one?
Ask every supplier and get it in writing. New Acorn lifts carry a 12-month manufacturer guarantee. Cover on a reconditioned unit is a separate question with a different answer that varies by model and supplier. We will tell you plainly what applies to the specific lift we are quoting.
Is my old stairlift worth anything?
It depends almost entirely on whether its rail was straight. A straight lift in reasonable order has value and often goes on to be reconditioned. A curved one usually does not, because its rail suits only the house it came out of. Either way we take the old lift away as part of the job, and the removal is inside the quoted price rather than added at the end.
Do you cover my part of London?
We cover all throughout London. We are based at 4 Hoodcote Gardens, Winchmore Hill, N21, so Enfield, Barnet and Haringey are closest, but we travel right across the capital. Ring 0800 4647401 with your postcode and we will tell you what we have in.
